Urinary incontinence in men warns of what disease?

Urinary incontinence in men is a common condition, affecting psychology, daily life, and even a warning sign of dangerous diseases.

TS.BS Nguyen Hoang Duc, Head of Urology Department, Center of Urology - Nephrology, Tam Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, said that urinary incontinence in men is an abnormal leakage of urine due to the bladder. Loss of control, inability to store water or excrete normally. However, this is not a disease but can be a symptom of some other underlying disease such as urinary tract infection, prostate enlargement...

Symptoms of urinary incontinence in men will vary depending on the type, including:

Urinary incontinence: The main cause is an overactive bladder. Symptoms include: a sudden urge to urinate, the need to go to the bathroom immediately and sometimes without a response; inability to control urine output; urinating during sleep; In some cases, they urinate immediately after touching cold water or being in a low temperature environment.

Urinary incontinence: A condition in which urine is released involuntarily. Symptoms are easy to recognize such as leaking urine when coughing, sneezing, laughing, walking, lifting heavy objects, exercising...

Overflow incontinence: This is a common male urinary incontinence condition, which occurs when the bladder holds too much urine , causing it to leak out. Some symptoms are easy to recognize such as frequent urination, regardless of day or night; difficulty urinating; weak urine stream; feeling that the bladder is always full even after urinating; tension in the lower abdomen.

Mixed incontinence: The cause of this type of urine is still unknown. Symptoms encountered can include all of the signs above.

Duc said that urinary incontinence is common in men, especially older men. Depending on the cause, urinary incontinence can be temporary or persistent. This condition seriously affects the psychology and daily activities of patients. This problem is also the cause of depression with a high rate in men.

Treating urinary incontinence requires a combination of factors including lifestyle changes, diet, exercise, medication, or surgery if the condition is severe.

Specifically, the patient should maintain regular water intake by dividing it into several meals a day; maintain good bladder habits such as going to the toilet as soon as the need arises, not holding in urine, reducing alcohol and caffeinated beverages....

Performing pelvic floor strengthening exercises and exercising regularly can help maintain a healthy weight, prevent constipation, and reduce pressure on the bladder and urinary tract system.

Prevention of constipation; definitive treatment of urinary tract and bladder infections in order to reduce the impact on the excretory activity of the body . Adhere to drug treatment.

According to Dr. Duc, surgery is the last option when urinary incontinence in men has progressed severely and cannot be improved by medical treatments. One of the most effective and effective surgeries for patients is the artificial sphincter (AUS) technique. The doctor does this by using a small, liquid-filled ring that is implanted around the neck of the bladder. This technique keeps the urinary sphincter closed until urination. When there is a need to go to the toilet, the patient just needs to press the valve placed under the skin to let urine out.

In parallel with disease prevention, men should see a urologist as soon as they notice abnormal symptoms related to the urinary tract so that the doctor will advise and treat promptly, avoiding serious complications.
