Temporal pain often originates from stress, prolonged stress. It can sometimes occur due to other underlying health conditions such as brain tumors, but are generally rare.

1. Headache due to stress

Stress headaches occur due to prolonged stress. Pain will appear around the head, especially on the left or right temples. Sometimes it will spread to the head and neck muscles.

The pain usually lasts about 30 minutes. While not causing nausea or vomiting like other headaches, tension headaches can increase sensitivity to noise or light.


2. Migraine migraine

This migraine usually starts on one side of the head, can also move from the back of the head to the front, behind the eyes. Some people will initially feel pressure from within the temples. The migraine usually has 4 stages as follows:

- Prodrom: Sensitive to light and sound, fatigue, mood swings, neck pain and nausea.
- Appearance aura: This is a sensory disorder. May be related to sight, such as appearance of image, point, line, light, etc. in sight; may also be related to tactile sensation such as needle sensation.
- Headache: Migraine makes pain worse when exercising. A person may also experience nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to sound, smell, and light.
- Fatigue: The last stage of a migraine can cause fatigue, difficulty concentrating, weakness and dizziness.

3. Cervicogenic headache

This headache is caused by a disorder of the cervical spine, neck injury or arthritis of the upper spine. Symptoms include:

- Pain on one side of the head
- Stiff neck
- Nausea
- Blurred vision
- Increased sensitivity to light and sound
- Reduce the range of motion of the neck
- Headache gets worse with some neck movements

4. Giant cell arteritis

Giant cell arteritis (GCA) causes vasculitis, leading to intense pain, burning. Pain tends to occur in the temples, although it may spread throughout the head.

Common symptoms include:

- Tired
- Pain in the scalp or temples
- Jaw pain when chewing
- Fever
- Anorexia
- Weight loss

Sometimes, GCA may also cause blurred vision or loss of vision if it affects the eye's blood supply.

5. Mild traumatic brain injury
A mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) is caused by a force acting on the head.

About 85% of TBI headaches are tension headaches. A person can feel this pain anywhere in the head, including the temple.

6. Brain aneurysm

An enlarged artery is a weak area, bulging in the walls. When broken, it will cause a sudden, uncomfortable headache. An aneurysm can develop in any artery in the brain.

Symptoms may include:

- Asleep
- Sensitivity to light
- Eyesore
- Stiff neck
- Nausea
- Vomit
- Sudden, intense headache

Brain tumors

A brain tumor is an abnormal cell mass in the brain. Symptoms may include:

- Headache
- Dizziness
- Nausea
- Confusion
- Convulsions
- Paralyze

Is temporal pain dangerous?

As the diseases are warned above, we can see that the temporal pain is quite dangerous. This condition should be emergency right away if it appears with:

- Increase the frequency and severity of pain, or the pain does not stop
- Affect daily life
- Appears with symptoms such as confusion, dizziness, fever or vomiting
- Occurs due to head injury
- Headache accompanied by vision loss, loss of consciousness or vomiting

Treatment of temples pain

1. Due to tension headache

- Chronic tension headache: Use of antidepressants (amitriptyline) and massage therapies, relaxation.
- Acute tension headache: Use over-the-counter pain relievers (acetaminophen) or anti-inflammatory medications.

2. Due to migraine

- Sleep: This may end a mild episode.
- Use of painkillers and antiemetics: Examples include metoclopramide, drugs that combine Fioricet and Fiorinal.
- Botox injection: Botox injection around the head, neck and shoulders to prevent muscle contraction, significantly reducing the condition of the right or left temples.
- Using medications: Tricyclics (such as amitriptyline, nortriptyline or dosulepinpropranolol), beta blockers, anticonvulsants (such as topiramate), remanezumab-vfrm or erenumab.

3. Due to Cervicogenic headache

- Prescription drugs
- Do exercise
- Physical therapy

4. Due to giant cell arteritis

Use high doses of Tocilizumab

Use high-dose steroids, such as prednison. However it has the following side effects:

- Weight gain
- Increased risk of infection
- Weakness
- Bone loss
- High blood sugar

5. Due to a mild traumatic brain injury

- Follow the doctor's instructions
- Rested
- Do exercise
- Relax
- Reduce caffeine consumption
- Physical therapy

6. Due to cerebral aneurysm

- Cranial opening surgery: Using a metal clamp to prevent blood flow to the aneurysm.
- Endothelial scroll surgery: Inserting flexible rolls through a catheter to prevent rupture of the aneurysm.

7. Due to brain tumor

- Surgery: Removing the tumor without damaging surrounding brain tissue.
- Radiation therapy: Shrink tumors by destroying cancer cells.
- Chemotherapy: Damaging cancer cells.
