Mild illness progresses to cancer due to subjectivity

QUANG NINH 60 years old patient, discovered abnormally thick uterine lining, but no treatment. Over time, the disease turns into cancer.

Doctors at Vietnam - Sweden Uong Bi Hospital said that the patient has been menopausal for 8 years. In 2017, the patient discovered that the uterine lining was abnormally thick 7 mm. In menopausal women, the thickness of the uterine lining is usually about 3 mm.

The patient was diagnosed with endometrial hyperplasia. This is a condition in which the lining of the uterus increases production of cells leading to an excess, causing the lining to become too thick.

The patient was advised to be admitted to the hospital for a biopsy. However, she did not go to the hospital immediately, but only checked periodically at a private clinic.

In September, when he examined the uterine lining to thicken, the patient just came to Uong Bi Vietnam Sweden Hospital to re-examine. Doctors determined that the lining of the uterus is about 15 mm thick. Endometrial biopsy results in early-stage endometrial cancer. The patient is indicated surgery to remove the entire hysterectomy and 2 appendages, remove the bilateral pelvic lymph nodes.

After surgery, the patient is scheduled to follow-up visit after one month for evaluation and follow-up treatment direction.

Doctor Dang Ngoc Duong - Deputy Head of Gynecology Department, who directly examines and advises patients, said endometrial hyperplasia is a common disease in menopausal or premenopausal women, from 45 -75 years old.

Endometrial hyperplasia is caused by an excess of estrogen but a lack of progesterone. The hormone progesterone is not produced, preventing the endometrium from sloughing, but continuing to increase in response to the estrogen. Cells of the endothelium can accumulate together and become abnormal. Endometrial hyperplasia can progress to cancer.

Endometrial hyperplasia, if detected early, requires only one surgery to be completely treatable. However, if endometrial hyperplasia is left untreated, some overproducts will progress to cancer.

Doctors recommend that women in menopause or perimenopause should pay attention to periodic specialist examinations to control endometrial hyperplasia, cervical cancer screening. It is not advisable to go to the doctor until having symptoms such as increased vaginal discharge, bleeding, pelvic pain, lumbar pain ... then the disease is more likely to progress to cancer.
